1 Samuel 9:26 & 27 They rose about daybreak, and Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way.” When Saul got ready, he and Samuel went outside together. 27 As they were going down to the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us”—and the servant did so—“but you stay here for a while, so that I may give you a message from God.”
The description is so rich in this passage. It takes little for our imagination to go to the roof and place a young naive Saul speaking to an old wise Samuel. At the end of this interaction Samuel says such an amazing thing, "but you stay here for a while, so that I may give you a message from God." On this day, Samuel had a special message from God for Saul. Have you ever had a message from God? I remember when a message from God came to me in my early 20's. I was dating a guy and we were not a right fit for each other. I was visiting my cousins in upper Michigan and God gave my cousin Kim three questions to ask me. I remember these questions so clearly, and I have used them with other people who were trying to make decisions about marriage. My cousin asked me these three questions in regards to my then boyfriend, "Is God number one in his life, are you number two, and can you do what God has called you to do with him as your husband?" I knew the answers to these questions met that we should not be together, but I was just so excited that God had spoken to me I wasn't even upset. It took me a year to redirect my life choices based on these questions, but I have never forgotten them. When God speaks, we need to listen. I received a book a few years ago written by a missionary to India, it's called God Guides. This book has helped me learn to listen to God. It is not easy to wait and listen to God. And sometimes you will hear what you didn't want to hear. However, God loves us and and wants the best for us. Will you take time to listen to him today?
