Genesis 12:4-6. NIV

4 So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan,and they arrived there.

6 Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.

Genesis 12:4: So in Verse 1, God called Abram to leave his country, his people, and his fathers household and go to the land that God will show him. This word so is in response to the call of God. Because of God’s call, the rest of the sentence happened. Abram went - Abram followed the Lord. He left his country, people, and his father’s household - wait! He didn’t leave all his father’s household. Because in this same verse, it says, “and Lot went with him.” Whenever we only follow God part of the way, there will always be trouble that follows. “Abram was 75 years old when he set out from Harran”. We don’t have any information of how long Sarai, Lot, and Abram lived in Harran, but we know that Abram & Sarai were already married when they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans with Terah, Abram’s father.

Genesis 12:5: “He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan…” I’m not sure if I should read 12:1 as “Abram should leave his country, his people,

“…and they arrived there.” It’s almost as if this sentence should finish with, “Unlike Terah, Abram’s father.
